In Him Was Life-a Meditation

“In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” (John 1:4-5, NIV)

Such a simple thought: “In Him was life.” What does this mean to me? It means that More than simply “being alive,” the Son of God, the Word, HAD life in Himself. Real LIFE was in Him. The life that animates everything. It warms me and breathes into me through all of creation As I walk among the trees and hear the sounds of water, wind and birds. His life back-fills the Law, the Prophets and the Writings of the Old Covenant As I read them. This life shines out to me like a beacon from the pages of the Gospels: In His words, His character, His healing and His passion. It explodes out of the garden tomb on Easter. It was poured out at Pentecost in a wind and fire that still fills and ignites me. Jesus’ life pays itself forward into the rest of the New Testament As I meditate on it. His life has captured, enlivened and illuminated all the saints Throughout history Whose lives and writings, though many are distant or dead, still speak. His life made me alive in Him as a boy and it pulses in me As a man as I face my challenges Today. The light of His life shines in my darkness when I’m confused, frustrated or tired. It shines in the darkness of our world and into the dark nights of my own soul. And that Life means the defeat of my final enemy and brings me the hope Of my own resurrection. These things, Lord, I choose to believe today. Amen.

Warmly in Christ, Greg Aikins

For Reflection

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?’” (John 11:25-26, NIV).

  1. In what measure are you experiencing the life of the Son of God?

  2. What helps you when you doubt whether Christ is in you and you are in Him?

  3. What dark places in your experience today need the illumination of Christ’s life?
